It obviously ranges from bugger all on some cars to quite a lot on others. Definitely worth doing the research.

I spent some time working in Xi'an, few years back now but having been to about 100 Chinese cities, no joke, it's a fascinating place. Be sure to prep for a whole day at the terracotta warriors place and then another half day for the museum in the city, so much stuff that has been moved there from the site.
It was a fun city at night too but I had a half dozen Chinese girls take me round all the cool drinkun n eatun places.
p.s. I don't fix planes either, I fix airports.

I liked Changi a lot.
Dubai is hard to beat T3 because of it's options available I think.
Koh Samui was really cool. In fact, it was sick.
The list of shit airports is far easier.

The Gulf isn't a uniquely harsh environment for cars, there are many other markets where the summer climate is the same or worse - think the south-western USA, Australia, many parts of Africa, India etc. Manufacturers go to great lengths to ensure their cars can work pretty much anywhere in the world without needing to make costly market-specific revisions.
It's a 99.99% certainty that the Gulf spec version of any given car will have the exact same radiator, oil cooler, AC etc as the same model everywhere else in the world. You can confirm that just by looking at the parts catalogue for your vehicle - bet you anything you won't see any country- or region-specific cooling system parts, beyond stuff that needs to be a different shape or orientation to account for differences in engine bay layout for LHD and RHD.
Beyond the legal stuff needed for importing, Gulf spec really just refers to the interior trim and other disposable toys.
