Western Freedom

Re: Western Freedom
it's not particularly new - my brother was walking home one Friday night in Cardiff and got hauled in front of a CCTV camera by a cop who was trying to confirm the ID of some troublemakers. When the cop was told it wasn't him on the radio, he was sent on his way without so much as a "sorry"...

The police now have access to digital 1,474 megapixel cameras (295x more powerful than a standard 5 megapixel camera)...so next time your at a Newcastle United match, be aware !
Here's an example from Ray (a BE poster) on Obama's inauguration...you can zoom in on the crowd and clearly see their faces...quite amazing !

er that pic was actually taken with a canon g10, a 14megapixel camera. 200 odd pics were then digitally melded together. regardless its still a cool pic
re cctv, most cctv footage is excellent these days, however most is still recorded onto video which downgrades the quality so much that is inadmitable in court.
Should you wish to be a pain in the arse to anyone be it shop, council, police etc who takes your picture be it at a demonstration or walking down the street. They are legally obliged under the freedom of information act after payment of a tenner to provide you with all relevant footage of yourself.
This is of course a ****ing nightmare to do as finding you will be hard and then blanking out everyone who isnt you takes time.
under a little publisised act of madness by labour last year effective as oif jan this year, anyone taking photographs in the uk can have theri equipment seized and any pics the cops dont like can be destroyed immediately with absolutely no legal comeback, the hundreds of thousands of amateur and proffesional photographers in the uk are now by defauult and law guilty until proven innocent..........
Now tahts western freedom for you

Police have been able to confiscate film and delete pictures under the Terrorism Act for a good while now... a student friend of mine has his pics wiped 5 or 6 years ago... although he was taking pics of people's reactions to a box placed in the middle of the pavement. Don't ask why. He only just managed not to be arrested.

Re: Western Freedom
There is a much wider issue here - sweeping police 'powers' now in place following various EU directives.
Forgive my ongoing Euroscepticism, but the European Arrest Warrant is terrifying in its implications..........

Re: Western Freedom
It's all fine if you have a government that is not paranoid but the UK has at the moment and they are getting worse.
It can now, I'm assured, be deemed illegal under anti terror laws to take a photo of a copper and some poor sod was pulled for taking photos of a train a few weeks ago.
A train spotter for crying out loud.

I used to be of that school of thought but then I started thinking.

I don't trust what the UK government is up to...a government should be afraid of it's people not the other way around.
My comments were based on the assumption that the government is fairly reasonable and tempered...
