I am always puzzled why ex-pats hold such strong opinions about the country that they have chosen to leave (and not saying the shouldn't) but it seems strange to do so after leaving to pursue purely individual needs.

This Farage seems like another flash in the pan type to me, the best he can hope to achieve is to slightly modify the behaviour of the dominant parties to cancel him out. He seems to have managed to generate a lot of disproportionate PR for his cause so far and well done to him but I don't see it lasting. His campaign to date reminds me a lot of Hague's (?) save our pound efforts.

Also one slight bugbear that keeps niggling at me is the sense of schadenfreude from posters regarding the trouble Europe is going through. The failure or success of the EU will not be an isolated event neatly contained within the schengen borders.

Some of us plan to go back, we have family and friends there...and many invest money they make overseas back home - this is something that has gone on for centuries, from the Yeoman archers whose potential loot from wars in France in the 13th Century would have been enough to set them up for life to the merchants, traders and even pirates of the last 200 years.

Few of us are as glamorous as our forebears, and most are more moral (I would hope) but the fact we are overseas doesn't stop us taking an interest in our mother country, nor are we less legitimate for having opinions about the current political, social and economic situation.

The whole turnout thing is moot - if people don't vote they have chosen to have no say and thus can be ignored - they can suck it up when someone gets into power they don't like. If they feel no party represents their views and interests they can start one.

If you go to a restaurant and sit their quietly eating horrible food without informing the staff and management you can expect more of the same when you go their again.

Brits moving overseas have fallen into two categories - invading colonists who stole from others and in many cases replaced them. In the second they are perfectly legal immigrants.

In the first case I can imagine nothing more abhorrent in the modern age and would not wish it on anyone again. In the second, do British immigrants integrate eventually? Well in the case of Australia, America and Canada they do - of course it helps that these countries were founded with a majority British/ Western European culture in the first place. How many second or third generation migrants in Britain are culturally indistinguishable from the locals? Why would one want to move someone and take up citizenship but not integrate, but enjoy all the benefits that culture has created for them?

On the subject of the UK. Every country has the right to say who can come in and how many. Every country also has the right to say if people come they must assimilate or not.

Currently in the UK the people have very little say in these issues and a good number seem to be unhappy with immigration in it's current form. Just because some of our ancestors went overseas centuries ago it doesn't mean we have to have an open border policy or stop wanting to preserve whatever we feel our cultural heritage is.

The problem in the UK is some people feel to talk about limiting or restricting immigration and naturalisation is the same as being a rabid xenophobe or racist - clearly it is not and I think many people are tired of having lines drawn suggesting their views are akin to such things.

Britain has limited space, services and a pre-established native culture that was a world leading game changer before the current levels of unprecedented migration or the doctrine of multiculturalism. Some people feel that's important I suppose. Rubbishing them as racists and 'right wingers' will only drive the ordinary people into the hands of really nasty people. This is why UKIP is good - it's forcing debate finally. I don't know if they will win an election but they could be a game changer and take Britain away from the Bourgeois elites and big business - which wouldn't be a bad thing.

I think that once you have been out of the UK a while you actually have a more balanced or objective view, (well, some do ) as you are getting information from more non-UK sources and many different points of view about life. Life experiences can alter attitudes and hopefuly make us more open-minded, although in many cases not less judgemental.

Those places were not called America, Australia etc when the natives ran things. Surely this fact of history would make us more protective of native peoples everywhere like the Maori, the Amazonian tribes and the English who have been in England since before Islam existed...ahem.

Or does it only work with non-whites who are technologically primitive?

I take your point to a degree. At 21 I was more often than not to be found drunk in the streets in the early hours.

But I was never arrested, thats a whole different thing and certainly not comparable with a bear, or any other creature shitting in the woods.
