Default Veggies

Afternoon campers, apologies in advance for this really wet thread.

I want better veggies and am finding supermarkets really inconsistent. It also bugs the shit out of me that something live Avocado is only available in certain places and is 3x the price in one shop, but the shop where it's good and cheap is shite with other stuff etc etc etc.

This isn't particularly life threatening, granted, but I'm trying to be a healthier Scamp after holiday and moving house etc. My mrs is as well and we want to be able to get nice, good, fresh, clean veg all in the same ****ing shop for at least a fair / reasonable price.

NOW, I've overheard some flappy old dears banging on about veg box deliveries......will these solve my problems of masculinity...I mean vegetation...or are they an expensive disappointment?

Thanks in advance,
Scampjustcheckedthathehasstillgotacock

Bean bags, coffee and now fresh vegetables. We need to take a good look at ourselves.

Nip out to the vegetable market at Al Aweer for an eye opener on the non-expat prices you should be paying. We ended up buying boxes of oranges etc, just because it was so cheap then juicing it

I get all my veg in LuLu and have never had an issue getting anything, it stays fresh as well as there is such a huge turnaround, place is always busy.

Lulu would just be a faff for me though, assuming the only one is by MoE?

Hyper-Helmet was good but didn't like the meat there....I'm fussy eh?

Take you ten mins to get there lazy git, and there is tons of parking. I buy some meat there but good stuff I still go to Prime Gourmet. Trust me it is worth spending that little bit extra time to go. Hyper Panda like co-op meat is not good, saying that nor is carrefour or Geant.

Best supermarkets for veg at decent prices are Lulu and Union Co-op (Al Barsha one is best). Aswaaq has good prices if a more limited range. The veg boxes are usually of good quality but pricey for what you get.

Carrefour seems to have increased costs and it's no longer cheap compared to the ones mentioned. Invariably a scrum and I avoid it at all costs.

EDIT - If you like frozen vegetables (personally I am not keen on the texture and loathe peas) consider keeping some in stock. They are as healthy as fresh in most cases and no issue with them going off.

Vegetarians

Vegetarians are cruel, unthinking people.
Everybody knows that a carrot screams when grated.
That a peach bleeds when torn apart.
Do you believe an orange insensitive
to thumbs gouging out its flesh?
That tomatoes spill their brains painlessly?
Potatoes, skinned alive and boiled,
the soil's little lobsters.
Don't tell me it doesn't hurt
when peas are ripped from the scrotum,
the hide flayed off sprouts,
cabbage shredded, onions beheaded.

Throw in the trowel
and lay down the hoe.
Mow no more
Let my people go!

Yep, I agree with Lulu's I used to get all my fruit and veg there and also Aswaq had some nice veges too. The trick is to buy the nice Omani grown stuff, like potatos, mushrooms and carrots, they are so fresh and the mushrooms eaten raw are a great substitute when the fruit is crappy.

We've just recently been comparing veg prices at different supermarkets (in Abu Dhabi). 10 apples was the comparator: 10 dhs at the Mina vegetable market, 16 dhs at Lulus and 20 dhs at Spinneys. The market is by far the best place to buy cheap, fresh vegetables. But I've no idea how convenient the markets are in Dubai I'm afraid.

I knew I could rely on you two lovely ladies.

...and yes Blue Cat; I am a lazy git. Driving from Business Bay to Lulu's seems crazy when there must be good stuff in between.

Meow; Is the Co-Op at Safa any good for veg? I only really buy cleaning stuff there...

lazy git, get your arse in the car and get over there! I used to visit the co-op at Safa Park but use the Al Barsha one these days, I still prefer Lulu though
