It's an excuse to have a nice meal at home with a good bottle of wine (rather than the cheap crap we normally drink).

I'm not voting as I think it's a nice day for people that need a boot up the arse to say they care. I'm not into big expensive gifts etc but a gesture is nice, personally I prefer more personal gestures. Besides the guys in my team send me flowers every year for being a great boss :-) better than getting a card off my mum :D

Yes its a commercial day blah blah blah but you could say the same about Christmas and I get sucked into that as well.

There isn't enough love in this world so why poopoo a day that is designed to bring more into it. Besides it's an excuse to treat yourself to some nice lingerie :thumbsup:

kittycat, the idea behind Valentine's Day is to let someone know you like them anonymously, perhaps with a clue so they could work out who was admiring them from afar. It was not for people who have been married for 20 years to make the token gesture of buying over-priced flowers or meals. The whole concept has been lost in commercialism.

The idea of parents giving cards to their children on this day, is just creepy. I'm also mystified why anyone would give flowers to a work colleague, unless they fancied them. :confused:

There are a number of theories about St Valentine, but most agree that he was stoned, beaten and then beheaded on 14th February. How delightfully romantic!

Forever alone: Got stoned, beat the meat and then put head to pillow.

I try to make an effort to ensure the mrs feels special daily / weekly / monthly etc.

Valentines she'll get a nice meal, a little gift and a home made card.

Shit doesn't need to cost for it to be appreciate.

Meow, I celebrate Christmas but I am an atheist, I see it as a time for family, to be with the ones you care about when we have such busy lives. Is that what it is meant to be - no of course not. I am a strong believer in making something work for you, if a couple have been married for 20 years why shouldn't they celebrate Valentines day. They still love each other (apparently some couples do still like each other after 2o years) why shouldn't they celebrate. I hate to think that being married means you can't celebrate such things. I love the idea of being an OAP with my dearly beloved and still celebrating our love together like teenagers. Just because it started off as being a whimsical day why shouldn't you turn it into something that means something to you. Some people find it hard to say i love you, Valentines day makes it a little bit easier for them.

What I find hard to understand is why some people get so offended by it? How can you get so miserable by hearts and love and champagne and lingerie and a bit of romance? So what if its prompted by commercialism, partners making a bit of effort and time for each other is no bad thing in my book even if it is sponsored by Clinton Cards.

Obviously my work colleagues send me flowers as they love me lol- why not? its a bit of fun. And as for my mum, she just worries about me being alone and unloved- not creepy at all- she doesn't want an incestuous relationship, she just wants me to know I'm loved.

And as for the history of it, lots of celebrations come from more sinister events.

I got a card in my office last year from someone and inside it said that she (I hope) was watching me.
I hoped it was a Lebanese secretary with bad English but it could have also been one of the funny chaps on the wind up.
She stirred feelings of a potential bunk up and paranoia at the same time.
Sacked soon after so I never found out, damn you HR

I got one of them once, it said, "I've been watching you, coming and going, one day you'll be mine"

I later spotted a psycho ex sneaking into a flat opposite me above a hairdressers and sitting in the window, peering out from behind the lace nets at my living room window.
