No they didn't, although like many things they might well claim to.

The old Egyptians and Mesopotamians enjoyed supping the odd beer, long before the concept of monotheism.

Also the Chinese were brewing beer long before Christian monks were around.

Something to keep in mind was that all beer until the early 1900s was served at room or celler temperature and was often mulled like wine (warmed and spiced)...

Beats a pint of that Fosters crap I'm sure!

I have only know three priests in my life who frequently challenged my non belief in gods, naiads, elves, spirits (though not whisky) etc. All three confessed to not believing in God and that their job was just a vocation.

The main thrust of their argument/disbelief was that if their God was not a benevolent one, then he could not exist. Cases in point for one of them was a minibus accident that took the lives of five young children in Melbourne and for another, it was the holocaust and he he couldn't believe a benevolent God would allow such carnage.
