they have a point but they might be able to achieve more in it in the long term rather than making short term gestures like this .

There isn't a "long term" though, it's 2 years membership and in that time they must abide by the rules of the Council - hardly surprising they said no.

And Saudi Arabia declines on the grounds of double standards...Presumably not enough options on standards for their liking.
You might as well ask North Korea for duplicity and economy with the truth.

Yup. See when I read this earlier today I was a bit taken back, then almost immediately I figured that Saudi didn't get what they wanted and or they feared their position in the SC would bring pressure on them to treat non Saudis as human and enact some gender equality laws.

Saudis are right about the double standards even if it's a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
