A lot of confusion about this from the online sources I've found. Anyone done it? What is the official position? Does it vary from state to state?

I tried calling the US Embassy but.......... guess how helpful they were...........

We used it in Florida a couple of years ago but reading recent articles you might be better getting an international licence

I wouldn't risk it even if you get the nod. US Traffic Cops are generally disgruntled wankers who know FA about whats what. Also, as you mention its likely it could vary from state to state.

Sure I used mine a couple of times but I think they may have changed the rules very recently

If it's not in English, you need a IDP.

The thing about the license change, in Florida, got over turned, for being illegal. Still, might find some muppet car hire places that haven't changed their requirements back.

we have driven many times in many states of usa and always use our uae licence, never a problem, i had more of a problem at heathrow...!

no you dont need an idl they did change the law, but they are back tracking on it as its really only applying to non roman alphabet ones. what is the point getting an idl to translate an english written licence into english. there is no need.

I had to use my UK one in Vegas. Remember to buy your CDW online and not at the rental company. They wanted to charge me $150 and I paid £20 online

you know that as a resident of the uae, your uk licence is invalid. you should use your uae licence at all times, in fact the rules state that when you exchanged your uk licence for your uae one, the rta etc should have taken it off you, but as we know, they dont do that here.

i have used my uae licence in many states as the last 5 years have visted the usa.

You give your UK address. In Vegas they will not allow you to use a Middle East DL

yes you may give your uk address but its not valid... so you are telling someone to do something illegal, you know what insurance companies are like if you had an accident and they found out you could be in trouble, when your uae licence will do just fine. we have hired in many states over the years with no problem with the uae one.
