Two enlightening articles

"56% of Arabs do not work: Gallup study"

here

"Calculating those who do want to work, MENA also had the highest unemployment rate – excluding non-Arab expats - of all regions in 2012, at 19 percent, followed by sub-Saharan Africa (15 percent).
A further 37 percent were employed but wanted more hours.
It is estimated MENA will need to create 100m jobs in the next five years to maintain the present unemployment level. By comparison, 5m jobs were created in the past 25 years."

this is a sure fire recipe for future dissent and trouble

and this one that sets an interesting precedent for us all.

UK refuses UAE extradition request in blackmail case
here

"In his ruling, District Judge MC Zani said no assurances had been given by the UAE regarding Afsar’s concerns and it had refused to allow court experts to visit UAE prisons to prepare a report on conditions.
Evidence was also submitted by the defence “from other UK nationals who have been detained in the UAE in the recent past and who recount their experiences,” the court said."

looks like a defence any of us could use should the need arise

I don't think so. Looks like a significant factor was the accused's ethnicity (Pakistani).

Does the UK interview all returning Brits who've been banged up abroad?

Doubt it but if your defence lawyer is switched on they will.

Granted re ethnicity but the non inspection etc would still count.
