guilty or not the treatment described is pretty much par for the course here. there are plenty of stories online which are very similar and i have heard a few stories personally which again sound similar. The ones you really dont want to hear about are the other emirates, one in particular.
personally i think the whole story stinks and suspect he's guilty as hell, in which case **** him he deserves what he gets

Did you know that Dubai tortures British Nationals?
Mark Arnold, a British National and father of one has lived in Dubai, UAE for 9 years and was a successful Operations Director of an International company.
His life was irrevocably changed on August 25 2008 when he was detained at Dubai International Airport upon his return from a business trip to the UK. He was handed to the Dubai Security Forces and detained by them for the next five weeks. Upon his arrest he requested a lawyer given that he was unaware of the procedures and all communication and correspondence was conducted in Arabic,; this was denied and repeatedly thereafter during the 5 weeks despite his lawyer trying to gain access to his client. In addition he was denied contact with his family and his embassy and they continually tried to find out his location and hie well being without success.
Mark Arnold was then subjected to continuous torture at the hands of the Dubai Security Forces and has been the victim of the most outrageous example of ‘trial by media’ hence prejudicing any possibility of him receiving a fair trial and ultimately any justice.
Details of Arrest
The detention in the early hours of Tuesday 25 August of Mark Arnold upon his arrival from a business trip to the UK and a visit to his parents with his fiancé was followed by 5 weeks detention, mostly solitary, at the hands of the Dubai Security Forces where he was moved to a number of locations within the city.
Arnold who has lived in Dubai for 9 years working and managing some of the most prestigious projects has never been in trouble with the police in the UAE or the UK, was subjected to a terrifying ordeal at the hands of the Dubai Security Forces where he feared for his own well being and that of his family and fiancé.
His initial interview was carried out at the CID, Bur Dubai whereby the Captain in charge proceeded to scream and shout at Arnold stating he knew everything. Arnold requested a lawyer of which was denied and also any contact with his embassy or family. He was forced to sleep that evening on a steel chair in reception without any blankets or food or facilities to wash. This was consistent for the next 10 days whereby on Friday 4 September he was allowed to shower and a change of clothes.
On Wednesday 26 August he was subjected to an Identification line up whereby he was placed in a room with African, Indian and Arab nationals who all wore casual clothing. Mark Arnold is caucasian, blonde hair and blue eyed and wore a business suit. When Arnold pointed out that the process was flawed and inadmissible the Captain proceeded to replace 2 members of the line up with 2 caucasians. However they both had black hair, brown eyes and wore casual clothes. Furthermore this exercise was worthless as the alleged witness had already been through the process originally and identified the English ex-boyfriend of Kerry Winter - Mark Arnold.
Arnold was then transfered to a cockroach infested holding cell of approximately 6m x 6m with 30 other detainees for several hours.
He was then transfered by CID Rashidiya/CID Dierra and Dierra HQ the next four and a half weeks whereby he was made to sleep on desks, office chairs or floors and had limited or no access to washing facilities. He was subjected to interrogaion at all hours during the day and night and received food infrequently and of very poor quality of which he was unable to eat.
The CID officers on duty during the night took Arnold out in the desert and continued to question him of which was a terrifying and traumatic experience. One evening around 2.00 am 7 CID personnel drove Arnold to his Villa whereby the Captain produced an Arabic letter of which he stated was a warrant. When the prosecutor was questioned regarding this he confirmed that no warrant had been requested or issued.
The CID personnel were joined by sniffer dogs and they proceeded to ransack the house. No witnesses were present and when he remonstrated with the CID he was assaulted and handcuffed. Items were removed from his villa of which no paperwork was submitted. The process was illegal and unethical and allowed evidence to be planted or removed in the absence of independent witnesses, this was duly pointed out at the time by Arnold and to the prosecutor several weeks later.
During the continual interview process Arnold was forced to sign statements in arabic of which he could not read and verify the accuracy of the content.
Arnold‘s car (Jaguar XKR) and Boat (Bayliner 265) were seized without any documentation or authorisation and have still not been returned to date despite numerous assurances by the prosecutor to his lawyer and his estranged wife. The delay in authorising the Power of Attorney also financially penalised Arnold to the sum of approximately 750,000 dirhams. The unwarranted delay in releasing his assets have now precipitated the real possibility of financial cases because he was unable to service the loans or realise his assets. This is despite the CID acknowledging the car was not part of the investigation as it was not used during the evening in question. Fithermore, Arnold noted to both the CID and Prosecutor that there was evidence in the car that would counter some of their claims, to date that has also not been returned.
During this tortuous experience Arnold reiterated the evening of the evening of 20 August when he had last seen Kerry. He repeatedly noted that she was alive and well and the CID are aware of the same as they had spoken to her personally.
Finally the CID Major then threatened to imprison Mark Arnold’s 16 year old son, his mother and Arnold’s South African fiancé Tanya. This was torture of the worst type and having spoken to witnesses regarding Arnold’s personality they know that the love for his son and fiancé was unquestionable.
Hence, the CID obtained a false confession and transferred him immediately to the Prosecutor. Prior to that he had repeatedly request to go to the Prosecutor but was denied. During the interview with the Prosecutor Arnold raised his concerns regarding the denial of a lawyer for all the time since his arrest and that the methods and process supports police coercion and noted his fears regarding being “fitted up” for a crime he did not commit. Furthermore, the Prosecutor advised that I did not need a lawyer. A further 10 days passed before I was able to meet a lawyer of which then I was told I only had 5 minutes with him in the foyer area of Rashidiya police station.
