Outrage in South Africa
Last week a 3 year old girl in South Africa was beaten and raped. She is
still alive. The man responsible was released on bail yesterday. He is
walking the streets. If you are too busy to read this then just sign your
name and forward this on.

The Government is planning to close the child protection unit. You may have already
heard that there's a myth in South Africa that having sex with a virgin
will cure AIDS.

The younger the virgin, the more potent the cure. This has led to an
epidemic of rapes by infected males, with the correspondent infection of
innocent kids. Many have died in these cruel rapes. Recently in Cape Town,
a 9-month-old baby was raped by 6 men. Please think about that for a
moment.

It was sent to me to sign a petition to try and stop the South African Government from shutting down the Child protection agency, a friend in the office tried to find out fact or fiction and one source said fact and another source said unable to substantiate, I hoped that it is untrue.

I looked up Fact or Fiction and this is what the result was

But surely "portions of Africa" could mean one isolated village tribe...I would be more convinced if it came from a more reliable source...sorry to be sceptical but we hear too many untruths, especially about the RSA and Zimbabwe these days...mostly from white sources.

I have seen this (baby rapes) reported in the news some time back. There are people there who believe that raping a young virgin will cure aids. Mbeki's government has an atrocious record when it comes to the handling of the aids epedemic. Don't forget he publicly came out and stated that HIV was not the cause of Aids.

and your comment about white sources is an excuse that the governments there use to cover up a mulititude of sins. None of the problems there exist, its just all white imperialist propaganda!

The Snopes article points out that virgin-shagging as a cure for STD was also practiced in Victorian England!!!

Yes, aids and rape are a huge issue in parts of Africa that should not be condoned or covered up in any way.

Al Jazeera ran a documentary a few months back about witch doctor cures for aids - there are some good moves afoot to integrate modern ideas (like condoms) with "traditional" medicine. Clearly, there is also a huge public education issue to be addressed.

The baby rape story is, however, unsubstantiated and there is no movement to shut down the Child Protection organization.

Sadly baby rape is all too common in SA I know lots of people that have been affected by crime in SA and some of the torture stories are so barbaric.

I see from the data that there were only 13,300 rapes of women and girls in England and Wales for the 12 months to March 2005...glad to see that Africa is not alone! Will certain people on this Board please stop putting black Africans down.

Black Africans shut be put down when they deserve it just the same as white europeans should when they deserve it. Where it comes to what is happening with Aids in South Africa they deserve to be criticised.
