tonsillitis - advice please!
 

Having just had another freaking four days spent flat out.. at a 35yo, should I be considering a tonsillectomy or just sticking on my big girl pants and sucking it up? Normally I take the big girl pants options but after the dose last weekend think I'm giving in..

Has anyone else had it done at this age?

I was about that age when I had 5 consecutive bouts over one winter. The Dr did mention having them out but, after some sucking of teeth, strongly recommended I didn't have it done because of the difficulties etc. They rarely do it for kids now and it used to be pretty routine.
Fortunately that was pretty much the last time I had serious bouts because I was getting really fed up with the sore throat pain and feeling like death warmed up. I think I'd have gone for the op if it had carried on as was.

Ta Mike.. got an appointment with the ENT specialist to see what he says. I normally just deal with it but the feckers almost closed by throat on the weekend and couldn't even drink water (in saying that what a diet - 3 days with nothing does wonders :thumbsup:) Hey you gotta find your upside somewhere!

It often comes from over-indulgence of a certain kind (ie.oral sex) so a small life style change may be all that is required.:fingerscrossed:

Hhhmmm, out here what do your reckon he's going to say about getting paid for doing an op or not? ;) Ask about the downsides, risks and potential for future problems as well as how long recovery is going to take.

I suggest treating any such advice with extreme caution. A friend had a wisdom tooth out here, and the same dentist has told me I should have two out. Saw my dentist at home last week--NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) strongly recommends against having them out unless there is recurrent, extremely severe infection (not just recurrent infection--really severe infection). The risks in the procedure are considerable. I would recommend you find out what NICE say about having your tonsils out (when we lived in Egypt the doctor there wanted to take my son's out--doctor at home said don't even consider it). And general aneasthetics for adults carry considerable risk.

Just to add a slight twist to this...

I, like almost everyone else of my age, had them out when I was 5/6. Mini Millhouse's are large - blocking the throat most of the time and affects his ability to eat. I have been asking his ENT surgeon here (an Egyptian lady) to remove them for two years and she has declined. She did his adenoids two years ago but refused to do his tonsils. I hope to have them done this year.

As for an adult - it's a major op. Don't do it here.

BB - On your dentist, I assume that was the Scottish butcher? He wanted to remove mine - I have never had any dental work done and the wisdom tooth have never caused any problems and is not touching the others. He thought it would be better for aesthetics. I can honestly say that man is to be avoided given what he did to Mrs Millhouse (and others I know).

I know two people. One had no complications but lots of pain etc. The other had lots of complications.

Both now are OK.

It's out at Awali and they are pretty well known for doing the 'suck it up and don't be a baby'-type of medicine than the 'please show us your insurance card and go & do a million tests'-type of medicine.

If it is recommended though I may do a flying visit home just to be on the safe side. I keep getting it for years. I hadn't had it for 6 months but then have had it 3 times in the last few months (first time I had to have injections to make the swelling go down was the weekend though).. With 2 littlies running around it just makes life difficult when sh*t like this happens.

Thanks for everyone's opinions, sounds like unless I HAVE to I'll just suck it up rather than do an unnecessary procedure. Ta muchly!
