RIP.

One of the few authors who could generate real laugh-out-loud scenarios. The cheese grater is seared into my mind.

It's so long since I read them I couldn't recall, you're probably right. I take it the bit you mean is when he had a slight inflammation of the member and used the cheese-grater to bring the swelling down?

Never read any of his books (but high up the list now). My folks used to have Wilt, Porterhouse Blues

and didn't Robin Williams appear in one or more TS films?

Don't think Robin Williams appeared in any of his films/TV adaptions.
Porterhouse Blue starred David Jason, Blott on the Landscape David Suchet ( and Jimmy Nail in a minor but significant part), also George Cole and Geraldine James ( both TV adaptions) Wilt ( a film) starred Griff Rhys Jones and Mel Smith.
I should probably get out more...:o

I'm thinking of John Irvine's World According to Garp, Cider House Rules etc - think my folks had those too.
