Tech Heads? VHS to DVD

Hi all, has anyone had their old VHS transferred to DVD in Dubai? If so, where and how much did it cost. Alternatively, anyone had any experience with the machines you can get to do it at home? Thanks in advance. Kim

For movies for sure, it's for the home video and super 8 film of my father-in-law when he was a kid, my in-laws wedding, my husband when he was a baby, that sort of stuff that he had put onto video for his parents 25th wedding anniversary and now we want them put onto dvd before they deteriorate too much. It's only the last eight years (since we got our digital video camera) that we've kept the original tapes from the camera so anything before that, all we have are the vhs copies and the kids tend to watch them regularly.

Good point. I believe the little camera shops do this but no idea on costs. Mrs RK had some old pictures put onto CD and they did a good job on that.

Thanks, I'll phone around and keep trying to source one of the machines. This really is the other half's area, but he's too busy to scratch himself at the moment with work so I'm left to research stuff I know little about.

you can get dvd recorders that also have a vhs player built into them and allow you to just 'press play on the vhs and record on the dvd' like this one... http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-D-VR4-.../dp/B0007RB1UO

you can find them in the magic kingdom at big electrical stores, so am guessing they'll be around in dubai too. :o

Thanks for this link, at least I know what I'm looking for now.

I'll go see if they have any at the mall next time I'm down there and price them. That certainly would be the way to go. They were really expensive last time my husband researched it, but that was years ago, hopefully they'll be more affordable now.

For Super 8 cinefilm to CD or DVD you can use the following UK service (but you will need for someone back in the UK to send in the film by recorded delivery):

Thanks MacScot, he transferred the cine film to VHS in 1988 while working in UK for a year from his grandad's stash of old home movies. But now we only have the vhs copies and want to get it transferred to DVD before it's too late.

Thanks, I'll contact them and see what they charge and have a look at the Digital recorders and make a decision.
