St. George's Day

St. George's Day
Jerusalem
And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon England’s mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On England’s pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold;
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold:
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England’s green and pleasant Land.
(Words by William Blake, music by C. Hubert H. Parry)
To all our English expat friends,
A HAPPY St. GEORGE'S Day on Wednesday 23rd April.

Re: St. George's Day
According to wikpedia...The celebration of St. George's Day was once a major feast in England on a par with Christmas from the early 15th century. However, this tradition had waned by the end of the 18th century.

Lived there for years ....Sutton Coldfield and Uttoxeter. Had the best of times.
You should get out a bit more - there are plenty of anglophile as opposed to anglophobe Jocks that like and get along with our southern neighbours, as well as the 400,000 that live in Scotland!
Of course we like to banter - see ScotsExpat and Inse's posts, for example. British sense of humour plus we can laugh at ourselves.

Re: St. George's Day
To be honest St Georges day over here seems to be picking up in good old blighty!
Many shops are now selling flags, bunting cards etc. & many pubs are now celebrating but its still not as big as St Patricks day over here, and I find that really annoying:curse:
It will be last St Georges day in blighty tomorrow, out for a few beers and and then an early flight for a long weekend in Espana on Thursday.
We will all toast 'ex-pats' across the world and have a good old 'English' pint.................................of Stella tomorrow!
Happy St Georges day one & all !!!

Re: St. George's Day
Not really sure what there is to celebrate.
Don't do religion and certainly don't do celebrating a Roman soldier who lived 1700 years ago who supposedly killed a dragon.
Sorry don't believe in fairy stories.
I'd rather celebrate something else rather than outmoded legends.
