England fan is shot in Kyrgyzstan

An England football fan has been shot in the build up to the World Cup qualifier match against Kazakhstan, the Foreign Office said.

The fan was shot in the leg in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan.

The Foreign Office said the incident had taken place in a bar in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek on Tuesday.

A spokesman said that the British honorary consul in the city was "liaising with those involved and with the local authorities".

The fan is understood to have been taken to hospital, but was later discharged, the spokesman added.

The British Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Paul Brummell, told the BBC that officials would monitor the progress of the case and any arrests that were made.

"We're continuing to liaise with the Kyrgyz police authorities over this case and in fact, my consul is visiting Bishkek next week, as am I," he said.

"We will certainly meet with the Kyrgyz and police authorities during those visits to find out how far their investigations have proceeded."

A number of England supporters have travelled to the region ahead of the 2010 World Cup qualifier in the Kazakh city of Almaty on Saturday.

But a spokesman for the Football Association said the injured man, believed to be in his 30s, was not part of an official party of travelling fans.
