Somali Pirates

Great to see that people are now employing self defence when dealing with those animals. As for the daft Kenyan official (sorry Shadya) saying that weapons should not be carried on merchant ships, does he honestly believe that a loud sonic device would actually protect a cruise ship against piracy? Anyone passing through those waters needs to emply a team of fully trained and suitably armed security guards as a minimum requirement in my view.

what you need is some serious hardware, rockwets launchers etc - when they arrive, just blow the ****ers up.

I mean, isn't it that simple?

I have a lot of friends working down there now with the Navy and other organisations. Some of the stories I'm getting told are quite hilarious. Especially the indian navy almost causing the pirates to panic and shoot the ships captain. The shermans and the brits were hanging off 'negotiating' through VHF when the indians sailed right on past and started the 'shot across the bow' procedure..the captain (an indian, hence the Indian Navy's rush to assist-national pride or summit) had to scream on the VHF to tell them to piss off before they get him killed..

Classic..

So are you suggesting negotiation or force? Its not very clear from your story. What is your position, Mr.Commander?

Always negotiate...

Then Force, but only as a last resort.

Always...

And when force is required, don't let the friggin tommohawk chuckers anywhere near the place...leave it to us or the yanks...if you don't want innocents killed, rule the yanks out also

let em have some of this lot,

oh and i'm fairly certain that the only long term solution is to intercede in somalia, kick the shit out of the warlords and set up a government, until that happens piracy is a very viable option for revenue generation for the warlords

how about 'let it slip' that a cargo ship is coming through that has a billion dollars worth of cargo on,

then when all these dudes appear in their boats steven seagal jumps out and loads of others lads armed to the teeth jump out of port holes and funnels and stuff and just blow them all up?

But how do you negotiate with pirates? Its a contradiction in terms. Why don't the rich Arab nations, whose petroleum tankers seem to be targetted more often than any others, establish some sort of patrolling naval force off the Somali coast? Alternatively, President Spugsy has a good plan but one probably more suited to the Israeli Secret Service who seem to have expertise in that area.

easy, offer them an alternative... they will refuse, but it bides time and then send in the shakys to eliminate the threat.

simple really lionheart..

Re: Somali Pirates

considering I have mates who like commander actually have and continue to train military forces in the Middle east, I wouldnt call it arrogance but in fact an informed opinion based on fact.

The overwhelming feeling of these people is that if the shit hits the fan, half of them will run, 25% will do **** all, 12% will kill each other and 12% wont have turned up for work that day anyway and maybe 1% will actually do what they are trained to do, maybe

seriously you'd be better off with your granny armed with her zimmer than ANY middle east armed service personel.

all the gear and no ****ing idea is the maxim here.

Anyone claiming to deal only in facts is clearly arrogant so I rest my case. Incidentally, if you trained the Saudi Royal Navy personally, why aren't you sticking up for them? It hardly shows the quality of your training skills, does it? And returning to my original point, surely even they have enough fire power to deter a couple dozen pirates? I am not asking them to defeat the Israelis or even the mighty Argentinian navy, just a bunch of greedy and poorly armed thugs.

Quite an arrogant statement in itself old timer

because we provided them with hardware and then attempted to train them in how to use them. You cant polish a turd however

as long as they dont fire back and it doesnt interfere with their internal butt-hole engineering or call to prayer

Having a university degree in International Relations specialising in Strategic Studies and Foreign Policy Analysis, I studied the Middle East crisis for several years and spent a considerable amount of time in Israel to complete my thesis, I do know something about the subject in hand. Obviously I am not as clever as you, but please don't assume you know everything. As for your fruit bowl remark, that is pathetic.

yes i'm aware of that, it was a joke, however your hard work seems to have left you ill equiped to actually understand the geo political situation in regards to somalia and whether anyone in the middle east is equipped to deal with the problem.
In case you missed it, they arent
