I lived and worked in Bulgaria for many years. Sofia is ghastly. Better to stay far away as possible. Get a place in the Iskur Valley near Svoge, or even farther away.

The nightlife is supposed to be pretty good. Know people who had stag dos there. Hot women if you go for the Slavic types.
Old part of town has been decently restored and has the euro city vibe going with a heavy dose of Russian influence. While still gritty in areas I think you'll be fine for a month. Some smashing old stuff to visit out in the countryside on the weekends as well as some lovely scenery. It's also a decently popular weekend R&R destination from Dubai due to cheap flights on FlyDubai.
I don't know when Scot worked there but it sounds like it was decades ago when it was still deeply in the maws of communism or the immediate post-communist years.

Last time I was in Sofia was 2012. It is awful. All the disadvantages of a big city with few of the benefits. Bulgaria away from Sofia is interesting.
Plovdiv is much better as a city and a place to live and work. Burgas also is good.

As with any city there are nice parts and horrible parts. Sofia has some lovely places, but also so not so nice areas. The outskirts are fantastic though with Vitosha mountain and near by mineral spa areas.

My mate took a young lady back to his hotel room in Sofia on the eve of a meeting to negotiate a deal with the Bulgarian government, back in the Communist era. They produced photos of his dalliance at the meeting the following day, subsequently sent to his wife and boss when he refused to play ball on the negotiation.

It was the Bulgarians who picked the wrong strategy and got screwed on the deal. He was getting divorced anyway, and the photo to his boss ended up on the office wall as a trophy.
The worst former Iron Curtain place I ever stayed was Warsaw in around 1990: a towering concrete decayed-Soviet-grandeur Communist Party hotel, James Bond villain surly woman receptionist, eggs in lard for breakfast cooked the night before, black water out of the taps and a yard square black-and-white telly that took an hour to warm up.

Hahaha, 24 is as old as i go.
I have been Borovets and Pamporovo (Great for skiing) if you get the chance go. I was a young and naive 17 year old boy...eating my chicken burger when the clock struck 9pm, the lights went dim and the strippers came out.
I left a man!

Want somewhere different try Stara Zagora. It has preserved the best of the old days with some of the improvement that came in post 1989. One of the things I like in the public park is that there is no war memorial, but a "Memorial to Those Who Died in Industrial Accidents".
Other places worth looking at are Vidin, Pazarjik, Veliko Turnovo and Gabrovo.
