So Facebook is safe ...?

Never have and never will use this site, especially having seen the problems users have mentioned on other sites. Information privacy is a joke

what's bad is that they don't announce changes, but news gets about and if you're careful, then FB remains private.

Facebook is like all things on the internet, a degree of personal responsibility and common sense is required, the vast majority of problems people experience on the internet are self inflicted and largely avoidable given a little bit of technical competence and said common sense.

Information privacy is only a problem on sites like facebook when people actively broadcast sensitive information

to check your facebook privacy settings go here, very easy and quick way to sort out our settings

These views are both unfortunately out of date. Now, your details are shared by facebook to third parties whenever your friends do certain things. Like activate the application helpfully provided by the Russian mafia to harvest all your details.

For the avoidance of doubt, here is the text from the Facebook T&Cs:

"If your friend uses an application or website that you do not use, you can control certain types of information the application can access. Please note that applications will be able to access your name, Profile picture and gender, as well as any information that is visible to everyone."

as i said
"Information privacy is only a problem on sites like facebook when people actively broadcast sensitive information"

my name is real on facebook but then its out there on the www for work anyway so i'm already ****ed on that one, my profile pic is never anything but a joke image, my email is a throwaway one and i never ever use any applications, i have no address, phone numbers or any information on facebook that i'm not happy for the world to know anyway, i dont broadcast where i live or when i'm on holiday and my house is empty etc etc

yes its not perfect but given that a lot of my information has to be pubic for work all i can do is keep it to a minimum.

the real kicker with facebook is that even if you delete your profile the company still keps all your information to sell anyway, best option is to edit it all to a junk profile and keep the account open but dont use it

I think it was the "actively broadcast" part I was taking issue with. You can lock down your profile completely using the privacy settings, and Facebook will STILL ship some of your data off to whoever it chooses.

It didn't used to be like that.

the minute you put any information on the net these days you are actively broadcasting it.
and you dont need to be a hacker to get the info just be able to use google is enough

I find fb good for keeping in touch with friends all over the world and dont publicise too much info.
I did however comment on a 'private' thread concerning the bnp and now get regular updates from them to my email account, shocking.

Re: So Facebook is safe ...?

I'm the same as you, Shiva - my "public" profile has nothing more than my name and a photo on it. I haven't filled in the "likes", hometown or anything. I block all apps I get invited to.

Doing a Google though, does reveal that there's a site that must have accessed some electoral role data (even though I'm on the un-public one) and traces me to several of my previous addresses, which I find worrying. Apart from that and some Uni stuff, there's nothing. Good-o!

I once wrote an ascerbic (truthful) article on mothers and motherhood. The editor emailed me to say the forum was full of outraged mothers (yay) who were deeply offended that I'd slagged off, amongst other things, their penchant for overpriced and unpractical pushchairs (hahahahahaha!)

She said they'd been posting about about googling me to find out where I lived.", maybe so they could come and hit me with an £800 buggy. I quickly googled me to see what was out there in the public domain and discovered... I was a lesbian porn star!

Fabulous. Still makes me laugh like a drain.
