Well, I was pretty insulting to Commander just now , just as he is to me...happens between other people too, I suppose that kind of thing can be somewhat off putting to new people...now, i am not new and not put off.....I believe I was in a very big fight with an old member here when I started on BE...it scared the shit out of me and i did post very, very little for a long time......I guess my skin has thickened considerably since then..

Personally I don't understand why some people take these threads so seriously?! It is all just harmless banter, unless you take it any other way, and in that case don't be so sensitive - it's t'internet!

its character building.
If you cant cope with an internet beating then you sure as shit arent going to cope living in the middle east where screwing people over is a virtual neccesity of life and practically an interview question for residency

personally I don't think a forum like this should necessarily be striving to appeal to 'everyone'...especially where the Sandpit is concerned.
just like some like to get their news from the Daily Mail, others like to get it from The Guardian...it's no different for forums...you have a look round, read what is going on, maybe post a bit and then you decide if you hang around.
the regulars on here all used to be newbies at one point, they didn't join en masse as a ready made group...
and some of the newbies display manners that aren't so nice, and yes, they can expect a bit of a rough time, just as you would when you entered an existing group of say collegues or friends in real life...
some people get arsy when their oh so important question isn't answered within 5 mins, without them having done any research on the internet or on BE for instance...
there seems to be a group of people that prefer to lurk, maybe they just enjoy reading but don't actually want to participate...again, the same happens in real life, were there are the vocal ones and the quiet ones.
We've had these discussions many times before, and have tried to get the lurkers to post, just to explain why they prefer lurking, but as true lurkers, they kept quiet...
it is true that when people know in each other in real life, a type of 'banter' can happen that isn't that interesting for outsiders, but that is hard to avoid...again the same as in real life, when you are with a group of people that know each other and that talk about stuff that you were not part of...
