Smart e-gate
 

Seem to be taking over at DXB. My old e-gate was not recognized last week in T3. Do I have to go to T1 for one of these or are they available elsewhere?

What's the difference between an 'e-gate' and a 'smart e-gate'? I thought, after a slightly incomprehensible explanation from local staff at the airport, the 'smart e-gate' was for GCC country passport holders only?

Sometimes the e-gate cards just don't work. I'd give it another go before doing anything else.

There's a desk before check-in in T3 where you can renew egate cards.

e-gate in Abu Dhabi relies on nothing other than one's passport and biometric scanning of one's face - no e-cards or Emirates ID involved. There's a registration process, where said passport and face are matched which turns out to be one's training course on how to use it.

We did just that on our recent return from holidays and it worked a treat.

As far as I understood from an Immigration official I was chatting to at the airport, one of the main uses of Smart e-Gate is for NON residents who get automatic visa on arrival (i.e. Brits). I don't have personal experience as I use my normal eGate but my daughter is going to try and register when she leaves shortly as she visits very regularly and does not hold residence.

The new e-Gate helps to get rid of the need for prior user registration with the GDRFA, which is the case with the existing e-Gate card. The new system quickly scans and reads passport information and captures biometric data including facial recognition and retinal scans using a high-accuracy camera. The system then matches the traveller's captured biometrics and passport information against existing lists to detect any potential immigration issues.

All these procedures are expected to be completed in 12-14 seconds while maintaining a high level of accuracy and security standards.

All holders of modern passports with barcodes that can be read by the e-reader can use the e-Gate, including children above the age of seven.

Passengers who hold passports without e-readable barcodes can proceed to the existing e-Gates or the conventional immigration counters to complete their entry or exit process.

Correct. The "old" e-gate was a plastic swipe card and a finger print scan, which, as pointed out, often failed to recognize any of the selected fingers. The "new" smart gate additionally incorporates a HD camera mug shot. They are mutually exclusive. I will visit T1 tomorrow and advise the procedure which will have doubtless changed by the time I get back.

There were a few registration sessions held around various shopping malls. Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi Mall and Al Wahda Mall have all had their turn. Dalma Mall's turn is next week, and the week starting 1 Sept they'll be at Bawabat Al Sharq in Mafraq.

I was hoping there'd be a registration office at the airport (call me crazy). Dalma and Bawabat al Sharq are miiiiiles away.
