Listening to www.2gb.com.au at the moment (think 'Gauntie' on Talksport) and the announcer is working himself up as I write.

i just don't see how it would be practical...as far as i'm concerned, i know that in the ME i have to abide by the laws here...so anyone in the uk needs to do likewise, whatever their religion...

Gordon Brown's spokesman said the prime minister "believes that British laws should be based on British values".
So Canon Law was/is British.......................

On of the counter arguments being put forward is that Shariah courts already operate within the Muslim community here. The rulings of the Imams are observed by the petitioners - eg in marital & financial disputes - and the affairs are settled without the intervention of UK law, and without UK law being broken...

Is there such a thing as British Law? Surely it's either UK or Scots???

UK Law for what used to be 'central govt'. Devolved issues.....more parochial.

Re: Shariah Law in the UK is "unavoidable"....
more to the point even though sharia law is observed by the communities here it holds no legal standing in the uk courts... for instance a divorce goes through the imam... it still has to go through a civil court to actually be legal...
so it's kind of like getting the parents blessing before asking for their daughters hand in marriage... not legally necessary but it helps
