Afternoon all,

Looks like the Mrs fancies a bit of a trip north of the border this summer.

We're in North Yorkshire for a wedding (if anyone knows of a translation book, it will help) and I suggested going up and up to play some golf and go see some sights / greenery / have some time away from it all.

I've got family in Dundee, but long story short I've not spoken to / seen / had any contact with in over 20years. I've tried getting in touch but they don't seem that interested - Dad must have fallen out with them to a greater extent that he's willing to tell / admit to etc.

ANYWAY. It's been suggested that Loch Lomond would be a lovely place to go, the old man agrees and suggest the weather is marginally better on the Western side.

Looking to go only for a few days - 3-4 maybe and play some golf, see some sights and ****ing relax.

Suggestions would be really useful, I think if we go West a bit, then we could come back down to civilisation via Liverpool / Manchester - might be worth staying a night and seeing those places too (never been to the former, only to Old Trafford in the latter).

Any suggestions for Scotland welcome, don't want to have to drive too far up, but golf course / hotels / location suggestions welcomed with open arms.

Exactly why I'm asking on an expat forum :rofl:;)

Dad has and can suggested some places around Dundee but I'm only going that way if the Auntie ever responds.

Otherwise, I've been looking at Loch Lomond and it looks stunning.

Anyone know if Glasgow is worth a visit? The Mrs and I have both been to Edinburgh (albeit my trip 20yrs ago)....not sure whether to visit the latter on the way or to go to Glasgow or to miss both out and stick to the countryside.

Take wet weather gear, warm clothes and fly repellent for Scotland. We're going to be just south west of Edinburgh end of this week and the forecast doesn't look too hopeful :(

Or is it too early for midges? Wretched things look upon me as an enormous moveable feast :thumbdown:

If you wanna go see Scotland my recommendation would be to go further north than Loch Lomond.

Go to the Moray firth, Golf in that part of the world is awesome a great little hotel is the Skerrybrae

Moray Skerry Brae Hotel Restaurant Lossiemouth Beach View Moray Golf

Over looks a great golf course with Ocean Views, But the hidden gem of a Golf course is in the next town over. It's called Hopeman Golf Course the weather in the moray Firth is always alot better than anywhere else in Scotland.

Plus Loch Ness is right round the corner. Go Nessie hunting!

I suggest further North than Loch Lomond - too many tourists there. Try Skye or Lewis and Harris. (one island - two names !) Glasgow has a nice mosque that you could visit.

Yup, head up further north. Inverness is lovely, and you'll get some great golf there aswell (Nairn springs to mind, although I'm sure there are some other ones just past Inverness).

And stay the **** away from Scumdee, a proper shithole!

Take the M74 all the way to Glasgow, spend at least one night there it is architecturally an interesting place. Then head South along the coast towards Troon. All you'll pass are golf courses. Stay over in Troon or Ayr.

Golf courses I would recommend within 25 miles of Dundee;

Expensive.

Carnoustie
St Andrews (Old Course closed on Sundays)
Kingsbarns-near St Andrews

Reasonable.

Downfield- in Dundee
Blairgowrie
Monifieth
Alyth
Crail
Ladybank

All the above are excellent and used as Open qualifiers etc.

3 hours to Dundee from Newcastle/Carlisle.

Ideas to stay...West coast for sure. Oban, Skye or Fort William. Scenery is amazing on drives to get to those three.

Golf- Any links course in Ayrshire..Troon, Prestwick or Gailes..

Hi,
here are my recommendations.

To get a great round of golf in, book Old Prestwick. This course is back to back with Royal Troon and is the original home of golf (the rules of the game having been set out and decided in a nearby pub in 1851). The first ever Open Tournament was held at Old Prestwick in 1860. It's no longer held there due to crowd issues etc. It is a lovely links course with lots of history. It is a private members club with many well known members. Sean Connery played there a few years ago :) While nearby you could also check out the Robert Burns heritage bits.

Anyway, leave that part of the world behind and start your scenic tour, I'd skip Glasgow and just get straight up to Loch Lomond, if Cameron House is too pricey then check out "Lodge on the Loch" which is really lovely.

A night or two there then head up the West Coast towards Fort William/Oban/Mull. Have a few days there then continue up to Loch Ness/Inverness. Day or two there then across the mountains towards the East Coast, you'll really see some stunning scenery. Down the East Coast stopping in Dundee to see your rellys and a few days in Edinburgh.

Board the flight back to the M.E. with a pocket full of Edinburgh rock and a tartan blanket and job done. :p

You lot never let me down. Thank you all so very much.

Not planning on spending more than 3-4 days, the two places that I spent most time looking at yesterday were around Loch Lomond and Ayr / Prestwick.

Thinking we will do one/two night(s) in Cameron house, then down to Prestwick for a couple then on elsewhere (thinking a night somewhere in middle England before back to see all the family and that bollocks).
