Default Saudis turning to corrective sex surgery

There has been a substantial increase in the number of gender reassignment operations conducted in Saudi Arabia in recent years.

"The number of such surgeries rose to 60 during the past year alone compared with a total of 300 corrective sex surgeries over the past 25 years," according to a recent study.

I am surprised this is even legal in Saudi?

This isn't surgery for someone who is, say, a man but feels he should be a woman, it's for surgery for a condition, the name of which I can't remember, where the child/person has two sets of organs and could be a man or a woman. They do a DNA test to check and then do the corrective surgery. It's a rare condition that occurs more in countries where relatives (cousins for example) marry as it is a genetic condition with both parents having to carry the defective gene.

Quote from the news article

According to the study carried out by Dr Muna Mustafa, a consultant paediatric surgeon at Jeddah National Hospital, abnormal gender characteristics are common among one out of every five children.
Holy shit, that is 25%

Published in the Arab News a few years ago, it was stated that over 70% of Saudis marry their first cousins.

Maybe the two statistics are related, if you excuse the pun

I have a friend who has a child with this condition - her and her husband weren't related at all - just very unlucky. But she had her daughter in Doha and the first thing she was asked was 'what relation is your husband to you?'. Turns out she was in one of the best places in the world for treatment (all sorts of complications occur with this as adrenal glands don't work properly among other things) as they see it so often. In UK they would have struggled to find a specialist.

There are some very good reasons for not marrying your cousin - apart from the fact that it's just plain creepy.
