So essentially what he's saying is that 14% of these jobs don't actually require you to do any meaningful work?

Yes, this is exactly the thing that has apparently been holding up my job. I'm one of those dratted English teachers some people love to hate, and apparently this overly encompassing Saudisation drive to employ native English speaking Saudi's to do my job first is the reason why I'm waiting, and waitng, and waiting (apparently I'll be waiting till the cows come home too, unless someone pulls their finger out, because they're a rare breed indeed!)

EDIT: also, those low wages for South Asian labourers!!!! Didn't realise they were 'that' bad, I had heard elsewhere they were getting average 2,500 riyals...........over in the UK we are seeing the battle for a Living Wage over Minimum Wage and think we're having problems. I see now why every Western worker in the region needs to be as polite and generous towards these workers.

I agree with it, would you work for under 2000 a month? It's not really a liveable wage is it?

2,000? Did you click the link?

Fakeih said 68 percent of foreign workers in the Kingdom receive a monthly salary of less than SR 1,000 and 18 percent less than SR 2,000. "This means 86 percent of foreigners get low salaries."

Yes, 86% live on less than 2000, I don't think that's liveable for a Saudi.

I can't understand why you aren't stripping it down further to the majority populous statement "68% get less than 1,000" instead of focusing on including the 18% on top of that who are 'lucky' enough to get between 1,001 and 2,000. That's just playing with numbers, something politicians do to avoid bad news.

500 is quite common in KSA. Saudi Riyals - not Pounds.

500Riyals is common? That's crazy, even the lowest paid maids get more than that here (and I know it's riyals not pounds...)

Speak to the Bangladeshis and others doing menial jobs and that is what they get.

For Saudis in the main urban centres mimimum is usually considered to be around 3000

Fascinating replies.......... my point in posting the original link was to highlight the arrogance implicit in the 'Saudis won't do that sort of work' comment, but it seems to have opened up a wider debate (well, sort of).

The ironic thing is - that attitude encourages the paying of miserly wages to manual workers in the first place............

A similar attitude is emerging among British "Yoof" who characterise some jobs as "for immigrants".
