$300-$400 = 1120-1500 riyals. Do drivers really get paid that much? I don't mean they don't deserve it for the work they do but rather I thought their pay would be comparable to Dubai construction workers, which is like around $200, right?
Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world to ban women — both Saudi and foreign — from driving. The prohibition forces families to hire live-in drivers, and those who cannot afford the $300 to $400 a month for a driver must rely on male relatives to drive them to work, school, shopping or the doctor

Re: Saudi woman detained for driving.
But Taxi = non related male driver, though that same problem is there with a driver, so does a male family member accompany them? But if a male family member goes with them, then why the need for a driver??
But aren't the lingerie salesfolk men?

Re: Saudi woman detained for driving.
apparently the driver is seen as part of the car and therefore he doesn't count as a person, so women can go out even though he's not related....but maybe I was told porkies...

Re: Saudi woman detained for driving.
think there's a day of demonstration next month when a load of women will get behind the wheel

Taxi's are the only real alternative to those who cannot afford a driver - bearing in mind you also have to buy a car as well as paying for a driver!

Re: Saudi woman detained for driving.
On most compounds, the limo drivers have family driver status so they can take the ladies of the compound shopping etc.

Re: Saudi woman detained for driving.
Thats pretty close but not quite. "Family drivers" have a different profession in their Iqamas (labour card) which means that they are approved to drive ladies etc - no idea on what qualifies them for this.

Yes, and apparently, women must remove the face veil when entering. For security and health and safety reasons...
When my wife goes into her Ladies Branch of the bank, she always comes out telling me how tarty all the bank tellers are dressed. Loads of make up, teetering high heels, tight skirts, low tops. Sounds great I said, how do I get in for a peep?

Re: Saudi woman detained for driving.
I have been told that drivers and sales men are not really seen as "men" due to their nationality.
Strange thing though, as we have "family only days" in malls over here....to keep away those men that apparently aren't men....

Well she broke the law - should get the appropiate penalty.
