One place that blew me away was Mada'in Saleh - it's like Petra without the crowds - now a UNESCO heritage site. http://www.madainsaleh.net/ http://www.scta.gov.sa/en/Antiquitie...dainSaleh.aspx

Nabetian tombs that pre-date Islam hence the lack of local interest. Loads of old cave paintings if that's your thing.

Also Bowling Pin Rock and Elephant Rock close by and the old Hijazi railway and Al Ula heritage village (similar to Al Dir'iya in Riyadh) and mountains.

Here's some pics:- http://britishexpats.com/blogs/albums/saudiflares/

But the natives like to take a pop at you on the Madinah - Al Ula Road (4 Frenchies killed in 2008) so a police escort is required.

Right, IF I wanted to go there, how would I get a visa? I tell you how, ...I would not get one. Tourism and Saudi, that's funny!

They will, ahem, go down well.
It's either Lederhosen for sightseeing or Speedos for swimming. And both of them don't cover the knees...oh dear!!!!

Angela Merkel hands over her passport at the Roissy Charles de Gaulle immigration desk:

'Nationality?'

'German'

'Occupation?'

'No, a business trip...'

Mada'in Saleh too. And diving off Jeddah... and when I went to look around the Economic City up near KAUST, I was shocked just how lovely the beach is there.

Saudi could actually have a fair amount to offer for tourism. I miss having a visa.
But you can have a beer in North Korea (probably called Dear Leader Grog), you can hold your partner's hand and your missus doesn't need to wear a sackcloth. I think women in North Korea can also drive cars and don't need male guardians permissions to do anything.

That said North Korea is bonkers in other ways aside from the obvious Communist dictatorship garbage. The first president is still legally the "Eternal President". In effect they have created the world's first Necrocracy...

It's called Taedonggang, and it uses a brewery that was shipped over from Trowbridge and reassembled in Pyongyang. True story.

Most norks would DREAM of a sackcloth, much less a car...

Well quite. I can't wait to go. Just need to start brushing up on my Korean so I can make (some) sense of it all.
