Re: Salutations, closings and sign-offs in correspondence
Dear - to someone I’ve never contacted before
Hi - to colleagues/people I email frequently
Thanks - to colleagues
Many thanks - if someone is being helpful – don’t really use this much
Kind regards - anyone else
I read the whole thing a few times to check for grammar etc then always think why bother, nobody's going to notice/give a monkey's here anyway.
Most of the emails I receive contain “Dear Sir, Kindly, Needful, Hence, Thrice, Same” and 90% of the time they spell my name wrong even though it's in my bloody signature.

Re: Salutations, closings and sign-offs in correspondence
I'm calling bullshit on half the people in this thread who act like they take some care over emails.
If they all did then I'd never receive emails saying Hi Surname instead of Hi Scamp.
As a test. I went to my inbox. I got to the 15th email. 'Hi Surname'.
The first 14 only two were directly addressed to me.
Also - what's with 'I hope you're well'. I used to use it a lot, I try to avoid it now because nobody wants to start with a lie do they?

Re: Salutations, closings and sign-offs in correspondence
I get so many variations on my name I have given up. And so many addressing me as sir as if I know things I have to be a man, right?
Best one recently was the one that started, "I now request your highness to pl look into the matter."

While that is a largely true stereotype , I suspect that it is also because the spelling of your name is also used for a mans name in India ( I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt)

A similar spelling is a man's name in several countries. There are good reasons why I don't have a head shot in the paper and this isn't one of them.
I spend half my day rolling my eyes so what's a bit more?

Better sir by mistake than mamsir.
I have, despite a masculine name that is never used as a woman's name, been addressed as Ma'am / madam in emails....

I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned the classic Abu Dhabi opening:
"Greetings!!!"
What's all that about?

if i am trying to get one of the many head wobbler's to do something i will sign out "please do the needful" otherwise regards or kind regards... i always use the latter in termination letters

Just a simple "Thank You" is all I use. Anything else seems fussy or stodgy.
