I hadnt heard it, and I see there is a comment posted saying that RTA will still charge passengers, even though the taxi driver is NOT getting chrged. Anyone know what the deal is?

Right, I was thinking about this this weekend. The max Salik you can get charged per day is 24 Dhs. So a taxi driver only has to go through 6 times to then start making profit on people. So how much money have these guys been making off this scheme? Also, if he picks up one side of a gate then drops off the other, then vice versa within an hour, thats double money making again!!!

It stinks.

Not sure how taxis can carry on charging the Salik?

If the meter says AED 30, you pay AED 30 - you can refuse to pay any 'additional' Salik charges, surely?

Or am I missing something?

Salik charges are added as an extra by the driver, so the AED 30 for example becomes AED 34, and it's up to the individual to argue the case!

I have to admit I spat the dummy a bit when one guy tried to argue that having passed thri Safa and Barsha gate within an hour , he had to charge me twice.. Quite simple finish to it all.. The lying little f'ckr got the exact money, no f'kin tip!!!!

I've now had 'oh sir I'm a christian and my father died last night, I can't afford to go back to india and the company won't give me any money as I'm not a muslim, I have no brothers and sisters - who knows? maybe something good will happen and I'll be back there tomorrow' line FOUR times now, I mean what? As if a couple of quid tip will get him back, or does he expect me to pay his airfare?

Ive lost count of the amount of times she has spun us a story about how she needs to send money home for operations / medicine / funeral expenses...
