Russian Passport Renewal From UAE

Russian Passport Renewal From UAE
Ladies and gentlemen of the bored....
I seek your sage advise on a issue troubling a friend of mine. She has just moved jobs and is in the process of getting her residency changed over to her new sponsor. She has now been advised that, due to the fact that her Russian passport has less then 6 months to run, the visa application will be rejected. This leaves her with the only other option of renewing her passport.
So, first question is does a passport need to have a certain validity left on it for a UAE residency visa to be processed?
Second question is does anyone know, other than returning to Russia and processing it herself (which can take up to 2 months, from what I can see) is there any other way for her to renew the passport?
The embassy have been of little use to her so far, so any guidance would be appreciated....

Re: Russian Passport Renewal From UAE
the "less than 6 month" rule is common for any kind of visa issue in many countries - tourist/residency etc. Is passport issue not offered as a consular services at the Russian embassy here? REally surprised if not - plenty Russian residents in UAE and visitors - worth double checking? They must do emergency stuff - she could say it is lost? Worth a try?
