RTA to abolish daily Salik cap

From the Gulf News:

'The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has decided to abolish the daily cap of Dh24 on the Salik toll gate system from July 15.

The decision would only affect a tiny segment of toll gate users, RTA said. 95 per cent of private vehicles do not pass under Salik gates more than 6 times a day, the authority said.

The objective of this decision is to encourage motorists to use alternative roads such as Al Khail Road and the Mohammed Bin Zayed Road in order to ease the pressure on the traffic corridors subjected to the toll gate system, RTA said.'

Re: RTA to abolish daily Salik cap

It's time to ask the RTA the big question - is SALIK intended to (a) raise revenue, or (b) 'improve' traffic congestion? Is there an official position on this?

Surely SZR, for example, being six lanes wide in each direction in some areas, is the ideal route for heavy volumes of traffic? Why discourage its use?

BTW - what is the position regarding taxis?
