Room 101 - accents
With such a variety across the UK, are there any that you dislike? Or that irritate?
I am no fan of the Brummie accent. I find it rather hard to take anyone seriously if they have a Brummie, Bristol or strong West Country accent.

I could never see the point of the circumflex.

Yorkshire. Purely for the fact they cannot say 'no', but instead say 'Knorr'.
Bolton, A truly dreadful twang. I shared a house with the most beautiful lass in the world about 10 years ago. The beauty disappeared and was replaced with a 40 year old working mens club bingo caller everytime she spoke.

Slightly off-topic: why is it that, when a Frenchman speaks English with a French accent, we all think it's cute, charming, etc, but when we speak French with an English accent, we are considered ignorant, stupid, and offensive??

Personally, I love the regional variations in the UK and find them all quite attractive. That said, if I had to name one it would be the South-Kent one - they really do all sound like pikies. Coming from the borders of SE-London and North-West-Kent myself, I'm alarmingly close to the accent I hate.

Not so much the accent but more the dialect in Stoke, where their women often say "How are you doing, my cock?". I feel like responding along similar lines. No idea why the Geordie accent should be unpopular. I think it's great, man.

I would banish the Yorkshire accent (mainly because I am a red rose).
