I guess I'm being ambitious thinking it might not continue forever or that some companies might be different.

I'm close -- I hope -- to hanging up my estimating dice and putting away my scale rule. On balance I'll miss it, but there are many things which are endemic and which I won't miss, such as the teflon guys and the structures which allow them to prosper. I haven't come across a company that's significantly free of it, but I haven't work for a start up (although, as a student, I did work for Early Learning when it operated out of a glorified shed -- as far as I could tell it was all hands to the pump with everyone pulling their weight: I wonder if that holds good today).

I'm staggered at the amount of *****, yes, actual *****, who thrive by being *****.

What to do? Lower yourself to being a **** to hope you prosper too or at least try to conquer working life with some positive moral standing?

In my opinion a lot of the problem is that many of the managers have not come up through the ranks or earned their stripes so to speak. If you don't have the knowledge base you will either have to bullshit or be some kind of **** to get by.
Now put that guy in a position of authority and most of his hires are also going to be either bullshitters or *****, because he can't personally tell the difference and perhaps will also be threatened by someone with actual knowledge.

This circle of shit is generally what establishes a toxic work atmosphere in my experience. On the plus side when one senior good manager does come into the business, you can see all these guys getting weeded out.

Very true.

Like any industry, people who do well at X are then often pushed in managing people who do X as well. Perhaps with no training or thought about whether they're actually capable of being a manager or a good manager at that.

This is an excellent point and really prevalent in certain industries . Also the make up of the senior management team that is important as well, the mix needs to be right .


Getting the right characters into your specific environment is a big skill . I see a lot of bright young managers nowadays but they're all very non descript and alike and when the shit hits the fan they bend like a lemonade sandwich
