Qatar uses Al Jazeera as international bargaining chip.

Qatar uses Al Jazeera as international bargaining chip.
Qatar is using the Arabic news channel al-Jazeera as a bargaining chip in foreign policy negotiations by adapting its coverage to suit other foreign leaders and offering to cease critical transmissions in exchange for major concessions, US embassy cables released by WikiLeaks claim.
The memos flatly contradict al-Jazeera's insistence that it is editorially independent despite being heavily subsidised by the Gulf state.
They will also be intensely embarrassing to Qatar, which last week controversially won the right to host the 2022 World Cup after presenting itself as the most open and modern Middle Eastern state

Not surprising as the Gulf as no freedom of the press. Still glad that Wiki has spelt it out,

Al Jazeera have commissioned lots of Panorama-esque investigative programmes and have the Doha Debates (or os that the beeb?) but they didn't do a prog on the WC bidding unlike the UK's Panorama!!

Re: Qatar uses Al Jazeera as international bargaining chip.
rather than posting simplistic comments such as "jazeera binladen tv", one's gotta be realistic. The US does the same thing with CNN. Saudi royals were blackmailed after sept 11 for more "collaboration", otherwise, embarrassing videos would be aired with all the dedicated programs that would follow. The same practice is used before any war as we all remember Iraq's pre invasion demonization campaign.
De Gaulle said and I believe he was right "States have no friends, only interest". RIP old man.
The good thing at least is that Al Jazeera gives a different point of view, which is a necessity. We can't just watch the world with our western eyes and expect the whole planet to see whatever we want to see.

mate- you don't even have to speak Arabic to figure out how pleased they are that the iraqi elections haven't brought stability to that country. They might as well keep replaying a tape that says "you were better off under saddam, who knew how to keep you quiet".
They are so full of shit- when some iraqis die as a result of terrorsit bombings at markets or schools, they just "die".
But when you have some terrorist launching random-aimed missiles onto israeli civilians, when he gets killed by teh IDF, the terrorist is not killed, he's MARTYRED. Tio us this means nothing, but to muslims, it means a lot. To Iraqis, it's a slap in the face.
That station is bankrolled by a despotic dictatorship that looks down on other muslims who aren't from the same sect. How do you think they see us?
Watch it to see the other viewpoint- that's as valid as tuning in to see what Jesse Helms has to say. We know it's shit, so why bother?

Re: Qatar uses Al Jazeera as international bargaining chip.
I don't watch TV so I don't know who that is, but assuming every viewpoint is valid means even the harangues of that goat-botherer Binladin are valid.
The only decent thing to do is to tie him up and to run him over with a garbage truck. Twice.
How many TV statiosn are there singing the praises of Gaddaffi and Mugabe and - yes, Saddam and Binliner as well?
Dozens. Are they valid too ? Don't be silly.
