Now that things are looking a bit scary and lots of job losses are you holding back on spending on non essential items and going out less at the moment or are you stashing more away?

Re: purse strings
My jobs pretty safe but I am paid in GBP so the exchange rate alone is costing me a fortune. Subsequently we notice just how expensive everything is now. So yea cutbacks are in force

Re: purse strings
some people here in 06,07,08 were spending so much on food and drink and probably didn't even realise it - let alone rent.
I don't understand the idea of spend big when times are good. How about just spend appropriately all the time?
A friend was moaning about have to pay off a 140k loan or something in one breath and next breath inviting us to a 600dhs a head dinner.

Of course now that the Dubai honeymoon period has expired (in mid 06) for me, when i find myself looking at the prices of everything and gasping...
nowadays i hear people getting a pinger cause Nelsons has a happy hour where its 25AED a pint or something...marvellous thats 5Quid.
Norweigan prices for living in a 3rd world underdeveloped shithole...
Apart from that, i love the place

Yeah, cut down on the number of times dining out...now go for the house wines...hate being ripped off on bottles of wine over AED300, when back home in Oz they are only GBP6 a bottle.

Re: purse strings
massive cut down took place in this house about a year ago, got shopping bills down to about 350 a week, no luxuries that end up in the bin!! more healthy eating and using cheaper cuts of meat etc, shopping wisely. Nights out on hold until DH secures another position. It is amazing how much you can cut down on things.
