Proposal to split Istanbul into 2, one European and one Anatolian.

Why do people reger to Europe as a continent when it isn't?

Istanbul is renowned as the place where east meets west, the only city in the world, in straddling the Bosphorus, situated in two continents, Europe and Asia. But it may soon lose this unique status if the Turkish government goes ahead with a plan to divide it in two.

Constantinople not Istanbul...and there are more pressing issues for Turkey than splitting cities like the need to stop illegally occupying half of Cyprus and start admitting it's genocides against the Greeks, Kurds and Armenians.

If they do this we'll probably have another civil war on our hands in around 20 years.

keeps the peace keepers in work.

Isn't Turkey going to be part of the EU soon, along with Albania and whatnot?

When will people realise that Turkey isn't in Europe?

I suspect their desire to join the EU will be held up for a while yet, despite the support of the main EU member countries. In any case, the thought of another 72 million people being allowed to move freely into Germany, France and the UK should fill everyone with dread.......

......... and still there are those who cannot understand the growing popularity of far-right political parties across the EU.......

Yeah Turkey has like a toe hold in Europe , but bulk of it is Anatolia-MidEast. I tend to think of Europe as West of the Urals and North of the Bhosporus, though even that is kinda broad .

I agree with you there - I mean, it's nice that the EU seems to want to be all lovey-dovey and let anyone join the club, but it's pretty clear that once these countries get in and people get to travel freely, then there's going to be a mass migration. Here's hoping the Westerly European countries sort out their immigration policies first. It's got to a stage where there's too much disparity between the member countries and it's weakening the stronger ones.

There's always got to be a border somewhere.
