An old schoolmate proposed to his long term gf who later broke up the engagement. He asked for the ring back, an old family heirloom. She refused.

Solicitors and courts got involved. Eventually settled by exchanging the ring for the cash value of it. Wasn't cheap. Around 10,000 GBP.

Jesus that's not good. Would have been better to rip it off her finger and throw her off a mountain.

I understood that the etiquette is that the person who breaks off the engagement doesn't get to to keep the ring. The injured party gets it as 'compensation'.

First time round I was doing the washing up and he obviously decided I was worth hanging onto as I was good at housework.

With my present husband - I was on the phone to him and I suggested that I could get a job in Saudi so we could be together, so he said "I suppose we better do the evil deed then".

One day I might find a romantic man...............
