Default BE posters in Qatar

Are there very many?

Looks as if I might be coming that way for business trips next year.

I'm a good person so I am perpetually disappointed by other people. Could the expats in Qatar be flakier than the ones in Dubai?

Not sure about flakier but there's a crustiness about the long timers here . There's a lot of 20 yr plus expats here believe it or not , very strange.

Saying that there is a lot of people coming in from the U.A.E as work has dried up there and supposedly Qatar is the next 'big thing'.

There's a very different set of parameters down here on everything , it's quite a challenging place to operate and do business and the Qatari's make the Emirati's look like nuclear physicists .

It can only get better as they say .

Just received an inquiry from a recruiter. The email started:

As one of the fastest growing economies in the world with a booming Engineering market, Qatar is one of the most exciting places to be.

Should I believe the rest of the email?

It's been the "the next big thing" for years. It's been trying to play catch up with Dubai, and in some ways it needed to (entry/exit system) but in others it was probably wise not to (fewer places like Barasti).

Did they ever reopen Garvey's?

Garvey's hasn't got their alcohol license back and they don't think they will either.

The Qatari's secretly admire Dubai but they'd never admit it . Gulf Arabs are like a set of preening peacocks having a pissing competition it's just all crap . The trouble is that Qatar fails miserbly on most fronts , it has a very conservative society and does not want any form of cheap tourisim whatsoever .

They have the money though and they can make the rules and the rest of the world will come begging . There's no doubt that this country has some very good potential but they just cannot deliver , no substance at all .

Everyman and his dog will be coming here to get a slice of the cake but the slices are getting thinner by the day . Projects are slow to be released and social change is very difficult for them to contemplate.

Two words to describe Qatar and thats dull and dissapointing .

I am surprised at how slow things seem to be happening. I was expecting a flood of new jobs to come online after they won the World Cup bid, but it's not any busier than it was before. Haven't they got like 10 cities to build? They'd better get cracking!

You know the score mate , there's no hurrying these people here , it's on their terms and their terms only .

Awarding Qatar the 2022 World Cup is akin to giving King Herod a babysitter of the year award !

They can't move the date of the World Cup, though. It's not like a new airport where they keep adding bits to it when they see what's been done in Dubai or AD and just extend the opening date. Is THAT finished yet?

Right. Just looked at the progress photos and spotted the Emiri Terminal, which I worked on in 2009.

Maybee they want you to provide assistance with designing the artifical clouds that are supposed to provide shade and cool the stadiums.

http://www.constructionweekonline.co...the-world-cup/

Seems far more practical than earlier versions bandied about, which IIRC used solar power to power multiple props to keep the 'cloud' aloft .

I wonder if Western governments pressured FIFA to give Qatar the cup, as Qatar has been very very hands on involved in deposing Khadaffi regime and financing the rebels.Plus they are now using their money and influence to get rid of Assad. Cause frankly I can't think of an above the board logical reason why Qatar got it.
