I'm not religious, total atheist in fact however, I wonder what is going on behind the scenes here.

BBC

I know, 2005 when the last papal election was - he sounds like a total hard liner, probably worse even than the kraut.

Oh well, here we go again, the movers and shakers got their man into the position.

Politics eh? That's all it is.

****ing hate religion.

Cardinal Bergoglio is "seen as orthodox on sexual matters"......... is that 'orthodox' by Catholic priest standards? And in what other job does your stance on 'sexual matters' matter?

Not just a hardliner but accused of collusion with Argentina's Military Junta.
Generally speaking clergy from the developing world are likely to be more traditional/conservative than those in the Western world.

Retired Nazis and Argentinians do tend to go together.

My mother will be delighted he's chosen the name Francis, her favourite saint

One of my ex girlfriends was bemused when she met my grandad and he didn't look like the pictures all around our house... It was the pope

Sadly for ma I fell on stony ground

Seeing that he is alleged to be conservative, he is going to receive a lot of "Lighten up Francis" comments.

"A Vatican spokesman said: “John Paul II never stopped going on about how he fought against the Nazis in Poland. It got very boring and so when he finally died we decided to go with someone who had seen fascism from the other side.

“That worked out pretty well. Benedict was a lovely old Pope who let us get away with murder.

“Therefore, when he decided he wanted to do more crosswords, we started looking through the CVs for any hint of fascism. And obviously your elderly Argentineans are right up there. "
