If the road is visible here:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=25...om=14&layers=Q

Then you will find the road in any free Garmin map from
http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

simply because if the phone has Garmin and the maps built in or is a dedicated unit, then you don't need a data connection when driving like you will with the Iphone (even if you try to pre-cache a lot of the map).

and yes you are a fanboy

you get lost in springs and arabian ranches a lot?

the maps are generally about 1.5-2 years behind reality. this is how long it takes them to update them from the surveys are done. in a fast moving place like dubai satnav maps have to be taken with a pinch of salt.

So I went onto the Garmin site and bought an update. I had already had the one-time only free update, so had to pay $90 which is fine, but... I went through all the steps, it asked me if I wanted to update my 'MENA maps', I said, 'yes', paid, etc. then got this message...

"This Garmin GPS is not eligible for this update because a previous map version is not installed."

Does anybody have any ideas why I am getting this message? Thanks.

Yes, you haven't installed the previous update

It's sounds like a incremental update so go into the menu find out what version you've and install all subsequent updates

Thanks Shiva. How many could there possibly be? And will I have to pay $90 each time, do you think?

Yeah, I have, but it could take "up to 3 business days" to get back to me, and I'm impatient...

Well if you'd bought a lifetime update instead of a single for around 50% more. It wouldn't would it. Mine is always up to date.
