Default Plants for the home

Ok so I want my place to be a bit more 'homely', I guess having tiles everywhere doesn't help - but what I want is some nice plants, big ones in teh corner of the room, some smaller ones on the shelves of the bookcase etc, maybe even grow something on the window ledge - tomatoes? chillis? peppers?

Can anyone give me pointers of what is good to grow and where I can get them from?

(bearing in mind I know very little about plants AND have kitten that may rip some to pieces)

Cheers all...

White lillies for death.... but hey, they beat car-f'in-nations. I get mortally insulted if people buy me carnations....

Chilli plants are easy to grow - and handy when you need some extra heat in your tostadilla.... The white fluffy thing likes eating the leaves. He hasn't died as a result. Yet.

If you choose the right varieties and water plenty you can have outdoor plants all year round here.

Tell her you found out that they are funeral flowers and as such will not be brining them into the house again...They are bad luck if you are supersticious maybe peoples cats died and they freeked out.....

Ask the garden centre which plants for cats or google it. Saw pepper plants at carrefour the other day on the veggy section.

That red xmas plant is poison too poinsetti?? something like that??
