Example - I hate the French - I find them arrogant, contemptuous and self-interested. However I like the Germans (warm, generous and witty, nothing like their 'cold' and 'aloof' image at all).
Or is it simply racist to apply such generalities at all, whether favourable or not?

Can racism be applied selectively? Or are people either 'racist' or 'non-racist'?

Visas are available on freehold properties in Integrated Tourism Developments (ie The Wave at Seeb). ITDs have to have something like 900 hotel rooms in addition to the residences. Once owners get their Title Deeds they can get a renewable (as long as you own the property) two-year residence visa from the ROP for around 500dhs.
HM passed this decree something like 3 years' ago and it passed into law something like 2 years' ago.
We're not wearing rose-tinted glasses or anything, but these laws actually appear to mean something in Oman. Perhaps because they're actually debated and fully considered before any announcements are made? If things change once we get there then we'll just deal with it and, if necessary, move on.
Life's an adventure after all ...

We used to go to Pissouri a lot when we were living in UK. Is the Columbia Beach hotel still there? Again... I'm going back quite a few years.

Yes Columbia Beach Hotel is still there and now has another hotel behind it called Columbia Beach Resort which is much more expensive. The original hotel has been revamped and the swimming pool area is much better. We love it there and usually manage a few nights in Pissouri when we visit Cyprus. The bay area has changed a fair bit - lots more shops and restaurants.

Wow... that sounds good. I think I'll put that on my Plan B list if we ever get fed up with Penang. I used to love Oman, just so civilized somehow. I always thought it was like a Singapore in the Arabian Gulf. What's the cost of living like there now? It used to be quite expensive but I'm going back 5 years - I think that was the last time I visited.
