Pick your carb - potatoes, pasta or rice

Re: Pick your carb - potatoes, pasta or rice
What a really nice way to frame a question...if you avoid carbs, you're dull.
I've lost 3 stone by mostly avoiding them over the last 3 months. It hasn't been dull...OK, maybe for other people.
If I had to choose one, and I have eaten them now and again, it would be potato. A very versatile thing, a spud. Jacket, chips, mash, hash brown, scalloped, roast, rosti...all good.

Did you lose both legs in an accident?

I'm just generally nosey and like to hear people's opinions on a variety of subjects.
And in reference to some other comments, does avoiding carbs make some people lose their sense of humour? Reducing your intake is one thing, but people who go all Atkins and make a big fuss about it all the time are rather tiresome. Surely it's a case of all things in moderation?
Cake anyone?

I don't bang on about it, but if there's a topic on it, I'll probably mention my experience so far. As far as I'm concerned I don't mind what other people eat. I also totally love all foods and would never 100% cut anything out that I like to eat.
As Mata Hari mentioned - for me currently it is about moderation and so far so good. Some people restrict calories, some ramp up exercise, some restrict other things - if it works for you then great.
You know me Meow, not exactly Mr Gym Mental Workout Guy - just wanting to shape up a little.
No carb bible bashing from me (as far as I'm aware - tell me if I get preachy - I hate that too!)
PS - You were the one to start the thread about what carbs you'd miss most - surely you'd think that someone "who's gone all Atkins" would post something! Also with the choice of no carbs = dull in the poll... hmmm..... I wonder if someone was stirring a little....

So - based on the posts so far either it's me or Jimmy that have a humour loss?

You have never preached and I really have no issues about people's food preferences and will certainly accomodate those who have allergies, but I have met far too many people who are humourless about it and I wasn't really referring to this thread either. It was a general comment, as was my sarky comment about carb avoidance and dullness.
You cheat far too much to be on a soapbox (not that you ever are)! And I do like to stir things up a little...

One can become a bit of a zealot, unfortunately. I've been reading Gary Taubes (Why We Get Fat) and Barry Groves (Trick And Treat), and have been telling people about my (what they consider strange) eating habits.
Whoever said about being a carboholic is actually pretty much spot on. Everything in moderation would be fine as a way to live if you were talking about proper food groups, but as far as I'm concerned, white, sugary-laden carbs are not a proper food group.
I'll stop now before I bore you all even more.
As for the weight loss, spugsy, you have to realise I was starting at a rather large weight to begin with.

For me there's no better carb than the good old spud! Not to play up to stereotype but I'm Northern Irish and i could eat potatoes every day, maybe even twice day.... Baked, boiled, mash, chips, roasties, rosti, dauphinouis, boulangerie, rosti, and the Irish special- potato bread.
Hmmmm i doubt low carb will ever enter my diet portfolio oh well!

Re: Pick your carb - potatoes, pasta or rice
I've thought a lot about this and if God put me on a deserted island with one choice of carbs from this short list:
Pasta - everything Italian & more
Potatoes - baked, roast, chips, dauphinoise
Rice - risotto, oriental dishes, rice pudding
It would be a Potato because have you ever tried to cook Rice or Pasta on a deserted island? It's impossible without a pot or an oven.
French Fries, extra salt
