Pay offs have started-Building slow down

Re: Pay offs have started-Building slow down
Yes I think we could be in for a rocky ride for the next year or so, but then as the economy starts to gather momentum again new projects materialize as well as old ones getting the go ahead and everyones wages rise but expats have gone elsewhere looking for work wherever they can and then you wont get people back to the desert as they realise there is life elsewhere with probably less money but of course lower rents and cost of living in general.
The company I work for got everyone together around 3 weeks ago and gave us the old cliche "don't worry we have loads of work, your jobs are safe" isn't that what happens before a football manager gets the boot?

Either that, or the management thinks that the rats are going to start leaving the ship (not saying you are a rodent of any kind) and that they'll then have difficulty fulfilling existing contracts. What they don't want is a brain drain - CAD monkies and juniors are two a penny.
Saying that, what with redundancies in the UK, more people over there should, in theory, be looking to emigrate for work, so it should, in theory, be easier to recruit from the UK, even offering an inferior salary to usual. Beggars can't be choosers and all that...
What an interesting prospect!

I think it is just construction that is being affected, the company husband work for are recruiting and the business is expanding, he is in engineering.

Another problem is you end up with loads of CV's on your desk and some companies use this situation to get rid of the dead wood and lower overheads generally.
