Panorama last night............

Apparently a no-holds-barred account of the conditions construction workers face in Dubai. "Powerful to watch" I heard.

Anyone got it, or planning on downloading etc?

I watched it - they made heavy weather of the fact that Jamie Oliver campaigns for battery-farmed chickens yet is a brand ambassador for battery-farmed condos.... He has since withdrawn his support, apparently.

Apart from a few obvious emotive cues, it was a fair reflection of the conditions at Sonapur et al - nothing that any of us don't already know....

Don't you believe it. There are probably dozens on here who have never heard of Sonapur and even more who were unaware that nearly 1,000 Indian construction workers died here in 2005 from heat exhaustion and other related problems.

My mate works in India and he is dismayed by the amount of corruption tha which he later puts in an expenses form.

Having watched the Panorama programme (sad), I suspect that the money promised to workers in India to work here in the UAE is not what they actually get when they are here, and that a fair proportion ends up in the hands of Indian supervisors/middlemen both here and in India.

Contrast the Panorama programme with that of the new Emirates Airways advert on TV.

From what I've seen (admittedly not a lot) of Indians in low-paid work, they are treated worse by fellow Indians then other nationalities.

If I'm not mistaken, the camps are over the bridge in Jahor Baru.... they just truck 'em in for the day so they don't have to have smelly setinggans on prime real-estate in Singers....

What do you expect, yaar? These goondahs are just some harijans who will be re-incarnated as mono-celled organisms in the next karmic cycle.... Mis-treating them is a duty as it accelerates their path to enlightenment....

watched it, nothing new, in fact he could have shown a lot lot worse with ease. Only surprise he had a pop and rightly so at leisure corp. part of dubai world and thus the big man himself, i suspect the reason behing the embassys pathetic distancing.

arabtec respond
http://www.arabianbusiness.com/55204...r-camp-tv-show

contains such classic as

"He said Arabtec kept labourers’ passports for “security” reasons but that they were able to regain their passport and leave the UAE whenever they chose."

"A BBC documentary's claims over living conditions at some Dubai labour camps will be investigated by the UAE's Ministry of Labour, it emerged on Thursday.

Saqr Ghobash, the Minister of Labour, is looking into the “veracity” of the claims of overcrowding and filthy conditions, according to a Ministry statement"
