The palava of putting up a curtain rail!
 

Hi all,

I am about to go mad- have spent near enough the entire weekend putting up a curtain rail- or trying to- its stayed up for about 6 hours and has just ripped aload of plaster off the wall - it seems my entire building is made of sand and pritt stick- does anyone have a masonary drill I could borrow as my little drill can't go into the cement and the brackets just fall off the so called plaster, even better would anyone here like to put it up for me as I have really lost my patience with it. Im not even putting up heavy curtains- only lightweight floaty ones! Its litewrally a 10 minute job with the correct tools!

Im not normally one to give up on stuff like this but i now think Im doing more damage than good to the wall.

just get a little man in to do it...it'll cost peanuts and save your sanity...

Does your drill not have a 'hammer' setting? I thought all standard drills were hammer drills these days. You need to go as deep as you can and use rawl plugs. It's an easy job.

meow- no no hammer action and it wont drill into concrete- Im blaming my tools rather than my skills!

think you have to specifically ask for a hammer drill.. the other ones are pretty rubbish..especially when used on concrete...

Possibly, but certainly ACE hardware will. Invest in a decent hammer drill and bits and it should last you 20 years. :)

I have to agree that drilling into walls here is hard work though. I broke two bits putting up shelves for a (male!) friend a few weeks ago.Thank heavens for those special picture hooks for lighter items.

You need an SDS drill really. I find going into the concrete of my flat near impossible with a standard hammer drill. An SDS drill (sadly I left mine in the UK) would make it easy work.

The maintenance boys in my building all use SDS drills, takes them no time.

ACE definitely will have some.. Makita's recommended! Oh and make sure you ask for concrete drill bits.. bosch have nice ones..

By the time you buy a hammer drill, drill bits, rawl plugs and screws, you may be better GALMI as MM said. If you have other jobs to do, then buying all this might be worth while, if not; Jim'll Fix It.

I very much doubt the LM is called Jim!

I GALMI and was fascinated at how he worked... holding the curtain rails with his toes while he cut them. It was worth it for that sight alone. I would have been ages trying to find a means of clamping it without my workmate.

Oh, I see... Ive not seen them here in the wild south.

So do you actually get a brit come out and do the odd job? must cost a fortune!
