Re: Overstaying your visa
'Smashed a police van up' - do you mean you got angry and smashed it up with a baseball bat or you were drunk driving and drove into it?
Surprised we've not read a Daily Mail article about this - maybe after the court case.....

The DM avoids bad press as much as possible. At least Spugs isn't locked up in jail while waiting for the trial - which is in his favour.
But I'd still bet the odds on deportation at the sentencing.

The lad simply suffers from claustrophobia and so the violence was an inevitable consequence of the Policeman's stupidity in locking him up...my lud.

he got pissed up, put in a corner and lashed out, hardly deportation material. I thought we were supposed to support each other not scare the living day lights out of people!

Having myself been given a two week jail sentence in Kenya for very much less, I sincerely hope that your optimism is not misplaced. Whatever the outcome, Spugsy will undoubtedly be fine and will probably regard the whole episode as simply good anecdotal material for future dinner parties or stories to tell his umpteen grandchildren.

Getting banged up in any *****ed up country isn't fun.
Last year I spent 10 days in jail courtesy of the Nigeria SSS and Immigration Service. I was never badly treated, but the conditions were awful and would never wish the same upon any Brit.
Thankfully there was no case to answer and I was released without charge.
******* nasty experience though...and all the best to Spugsy
