Re: Only 1 in 70 Dubai drivers avoided a fine last year!
My mrs got a 15 day impounding for jumping a red light. She googled it and read nothing but horror stories about getting speeding fines whilst car impounded and just having to pay them. So she paid the 100 a day to not have it impounded (READ: I paid).

Normally, there is a hazard - like a badly placed U-turn (on the desert roads). sometimes they are just ill-placed e.g. A camera that has got me a few times is put on the slip road to a motorway - the slip road had a limit of 80, the motorway 120. The whole point of a slip road is to accelerate to motorway speeds...

Dubai Police arrest driver for 24 traffic offences in 15 minutes - Emirates 24|7
None for me in 7 years, very dull.

Just 1 per cent of drivers in Dubai managed to keep a clean sheet last year by avoiding any traffic fines.
New statistics from Dubai Traffic Police revealed that out of 1.3 million motorists on the emirate’s roads, only 18,000 kept a clean licence – about one in 70.

Clucking bell only 18,000 people did not get a ticket!!! Of course I shall be very sanctimonious and holier than thou art because I was 1 of those 18,000 (thanks to cruise control). Although I popped my cherry earlier this year (3 years ticket free).
So come on, who are the bad boys out here? Who claims the biggest fine and black points?

I get a few each year but only ever for being a bit over the limit. I'm no dangerous driver but neither am I a dullard.

I've had a few tickets over the last 4 years.
Most of them of the speeding variety - nothing major to be honest, mostly where I just crept over the limit or was surprised by a sudden decrease in speed and a camera round a corner. Also had a few parking tickets for leaving car up on the curb when there was nowhere to park like in Dragonmart. Everyone does it but it always seems like I am the only one to get a ticket which sucks. My prized possession is the ticket+points I received for an illegal u-turn just outside traffic court (oops).
My wife got ticket+points for not stopping for pedestrians outside Ibn Battuta which is hilarious considering nobody ever stops....

This is very true, and applying the traffic law equally to all who break it would be a good start. Anyway my wife was adamant there were no pedestrians in sight at the crossing so perhaps it was a case of quotas being filled (not saying they actually exist..)

nothing 2013-2014. Just got my first parking fine on Saturday. Service was slow so we ended up overstaying in the parking spot.

pedestrian crossings in the Greens are an nightmare. Situated right next to roundabouts and very poor lighting.
doesn't help when idiots decide to stand next to the crossing to wait for a taxi!

I worry about stopping at crossings as most drivers here never do and will end up driving into the back of you. Before slowing I always check what's behind me. If a white Landcruiser is close then sorry pedestrians, but you'll have to wait.

Anyway - how many times do pedestrians actually stop and look before crossing?
*Some* nationalities appear to treat pathways and crossings the same as they treat road junctions when driving - start to go and then have a look, by which time it'll be too late and you're out anyway so whatever was coming with right of way will have had to slow enough to let you out regardless. Then gesture at the car that you've just nearly crashed into with bemusement when they go ape shit at your stupidity. /breathe

If they're on a crossing, then pedestrians always have right of way. Even (unfortunately) at those ridiculous crossings on roundabouts.

Ideally you cross the road by hiding behind a bush on the exit of a roundabout then jumping out

I'm talking more in general, for example in Business Bay where there are some smaller side roads that people just step out, no marked crossing, nothing.
