So how do I persuade Her Indoors that cats are not unhygienic?

By not showing her sensationalist articles like that one?

Cats are one the cleanest pets you can have. You just have to clean their tray and food plates etc thoroughly on a regular basis as you would do your own.

real men prefer dogs but I suppose thats not relevant if you have to ask your wife if you can have a cat.:blink:

they are so clean and independent, you'll hardly believe it.

As Meow said, clean bowls, pick out the lumps from the cat litter daily (change the actual litter ever week or so) and maybe have a scratch post (some cats like one, some don't)... and that's it.

Far more personality than a fish too, but just as little maintenance!

it's a cultural thing I don't think you would ever disuade her. Sadly. The little ones loss :(
