That was what prompted FIFA to scrap the second-round group-stage which favoured 'not losing' over winning.

And closer to home: I cannot recall the year but England and Northern Ireland played out a 'hard-fought' (not) 0-0 at Wembley so both qualified for the finals (1982 or 1986 WC qualifier?). No sense of fair play there - barely a shot on target all night........

Small pools/groups always run this risk - one unexpected defeat means you finish second not first, and the likely opponents in the next round try to lose to avoid you......... by losing to the GB women last night, the Brazilian ladies will now play someone who must have thought they would avoid them (I'll check who that is, if anyone's remotely interested).

Coventry v Bristol city 1977, kicked off late and played out the last 15 minutes knowing a draw saved them both and Sunderland would go down. Jimmy Hill still hated...... Not that we're bitter you understand !

Could I just pop in (again) to recommend london2012.com as the best website ever? Apart from being very easy to navigate around, it isn't updated with scores 'regularly' - it is updated live.

Just had the beach volleyball on the telly while following the score on the website - updates are instantaneous, including each shot (serve, attack, dig, etc).

Superb.

[Ladies about to start - at 10pm London time - with another game after that]

Also:

London Eye looking stunning by night.

And I'm enjoying the commentators' references to London landmarks ("..... at the Downing Street end....")

Wiggins. ****ing awesome. Great ride, dominate that time trial and the crowd looked absolutely immense. Great stuff. Froome as well, he'll be a champion soon enough.

Glover and Stanning - Missed the rowing because I was at Sega Republic. Gutted. Replays I've watched looked really exciting and again, the crowd were mental.

Don't forget Jamieson's silver in the pool. Only just lost out, another 5 metres and he'd have got gold.

Nice to hear the National Anthem being sung loudly by the fans in Cardiff last night, drowning out a few boos and stuff. Still only about half the players joining in though...........

Well the Chinese badminton pair who threw the game have been booted from the games and one of them is now saying that she is retiring from the sport.

The other 3 Asian pairs involved have also been booted.

The Chinese coach needs to be booted. I am not in favour of booting the S.Koreans because they were only responding to the Chinese.

This cannot be right. Two more golds, now placed 5th in the leader-board.

I'm proud of you, Team GB.

Another catastrophe for Team GB. Actually, I have question for you Mr. The Dean - is the level of disqualifications in these games normal? I've never shown any interest in the Olympics before so don't know what is normal, but it seems very high.

Anyway - to give you something to ponder, I though you'd like this. I'm not sure the equipment is of Olympic standard - The bike looks very basic to me.

What an amazing day at the games. Great day for team GB. So many brilliant performances.

Chris Hoy getting another gold and a world record (twice) with the sprint team. Shame for Pendelton and Varnish... and the pursuit looked incredible.
Canoe gold and silver.
Trap shooting - a machine! (love that when his funding was cut years ago one of the Maktoum's stepped in and funded him)
Judo - top result

and more....

Phelps - sorry The Dean - has performed again and that medley was such a great defence and the first man to retain the gold not once, but twice over 3 games....

Oh and Andy Murray won twice today too

Loving this already - can't believe the athletics has yet to start tomorrow...
